Mayor’s Office Confirms Trip And Police Escort

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s spokesperson, Dora Pekec, confirmed the trip and the security arrangement in comments to The New York Post. “Following the strong advice from NYPD, First Lady security detail [will] be with her as she visits family in Syria and Lebanon,” Pekec said. The office did not offer more detail on why the visit called for a taxpayer-funded escort.

Duwaji became New York City’s first lady in January 2026, the first Gen Z and first Muslim person to hold the informal role. She has kept a mostly private profile since the inauguration, focusing on her career as an illustrator and ceramist rather than taking on official city duties.

Private Trip, Public Money

An insider close to the situation told The Post the September trip “does not involve any city-related activities” and is “not official business”. That description raises a basic question many New Yorkers will ask: why does a personal family visit come with a police detail paid for by city taxpayers? The mayor’s office has not answered that question directly.

The timing adds another layer. Syria and Lebanon both appear on the State Department’s “Do Not Travel” advisory list because of ongoing danger. Supporters of the arrangement can point to that danger as the reason NYPD recommended protection in the first place. Critics see it differently, framing the trip as risky travel that taxpayers should not have to subsidize.

A Pattern Of Scrutiny Over Foreign Travel

This is not the first time Duwaji’s travel has drawn attention. In July 2026, she traveled to Mallorca, Spain, for an Islamic “spiritual wellness” retreat instead of attending America’s 250th anniversary celebrations. At that time, the mayor’s office said no tax-funded security detail went with her on that trip or another prior trip. That earlier statement makes the new Syria and Lebanon detail a noticeable shift in practice.

Security has become a real concern around the mayor’s residence. Police arrested six people after a smoke-generating device was thrown during an anti-Muslim protest outside the mayor’s home. No one was hurt, but the incident shows tensions around the mayor’s family have moved beyond online arguments. That context may help explain why NYPD would recommend protection for overseas travel, even personal trips.

A report found Duwaji posted messages as a teenager and young adult that praised members of a Palestinian militant group and glorified violence during the First Intifada. Those posts, resurfaced after Mamdani’s election, feed into a broader argument from critics that the family’s political and personal choices deserve closer public examination.

Several basic facts are still missing from the public record. No document has been released showing the NYPD’s specific threat assessment for Syria and Lebanon, the cost of the detail, or the policy that allows taxpayer-funded protection for a private international trip. Without those records, the public cannot judge whether this is standard practice or a break from how past mayoral families were protected.

For now, the facts that are confirmed are straightforward: a mayor’s spouse is traveling to two countries under federal danger warnings, taxpayers are footing the bill for her police escort, and city officials have offered little beyond a general reference to police advice.
